Liliana sometimes decides she's going to be stubbornly grumpy. Almost nothing can shake her out of this attitude when she's committed to it. Not that we don't try - but sometimes when your performance falls flat, you feel like a comedian who's totally flopped. Katie's often fought Lilie's grumpiness with some humor, and when confronted with stony silence has quipped, "Hello... hello - is this thing on?".
We didn't think Lilie got it - until the other night, when Katie was talking to me on the phone as we commuted home from different points. We'd been talking a while, with Lilie babbling in the background the whole time. Suddenly, I thought I heard Katie start to choke on the phone. She didn't take long to recover, but laughed a long time before she could explain what happened:
Lilie had been chattering away to Katie and was apparently frustrated with the attention she was or wasn't getting. Katie had been giving the noise in the back seat half an ear until she heard a pause, and then Lilie popped off: "Hello - is this thing on?"
